Knotless Vs. Knot – What Is The Difference

Knotless Vs. Knot - What Is The Difference

To knot, or to not to knot
Hair |  June 9, 2023

Box braids, faux locs, and twists all have something in common. Their similarity is the different methods of adding hair. Depending on the hairstyle, it will either be labeled as a knotless style or not.

As an FYI, people usually don’t say knot box braids or box braids with knots because the knot method is how it all started. So, if the braids are not knotless, they are called braids.

Now that we have two ways to add braiding hair, here is some insight into the difference between the two methods. You will understand how they are different, the benefits of the two, and more.

As of now, let’s begin with a clear visual depiction of how they are different.

Knot Vs. Knotless

As you can see, there is a clear visual difference between the two. Knotless looks more seamless and natural, and the other has a clear starting point.

Braid styles that begin with a knot can also appear tighter than knotless styles. Some people feel that hairstyles that start with a knot can look bulky at the top. That look may not be their preference, and flatter roots are what they want.

This is why knotless styles have become popular and are now the most used method. There is a reason why these two look different, which will be explained next.

Is the Method of Adding Braiding Hair Different?

Yes, the methods are different. Hairstyles like box braids began with the knot method, which was how everyone wore them.

Later on, a hairstylist innovated a new way to add braiding hair. This technique became the new way to wear any braid hairstyle. How the hair is added may be different, but the end result is always a neat braid, twist, or faux loc

Let’s start with the beginning and learn how to add hair using the knot method, and then you can follow the knotless technique.

The Knot Method

The Knotless Method

As you can see, the method you choose to add the hair changes how the braid will look. You will need to decide which technique is best for you. That choice will be based on which method looks best and which is easier for you to add hair.

Both methods can be challenging for a beginner because of finger placement and grip. So, when trying either one: remember, “Practice makes perfect.

Which One Lasts Longer?

The knot method lasts a few days to a week longer than the knotless method. Since the natural hair is wrapped into the braiding hair at the root, it will take longer for the new growth to show.

By contrast, the knotless method begins with the natural hair exposed, allowing the new growth to be more visible sooner.

Overall, both methods last about the same depending on the braid style. It’s more like which one will remain fresher and frizz-free longer.
