I always enjoyed creating and painting nails and trying some new nail products or designs. With polygel on the market, I just knew I had to see what would make it different from gel and acrylic.
If you are wondering what polygel is, it is a combination of gel enhancement and acrylic. I have a more in-depth post about polygel if you want to learn more about it and learn how to use it.
Companies try to market polygel as a beginner-friendly product compared to using acrylic, but that is not necessarily true. Like any new product, there will be some trial and error when learning how to use it, and polygel is no exception.
You might be able to do it a lot quicker than I could or not, but practice makes perfect when learning how to form nails with polygel. Use my experience with polygel as a guide when you are trying it out for the first time.
By the end, you will know what to expect from a Modelones Polygel Kit and be able to decide on trying this kit for yourself.
This Product Is For You If…
- You want to try a new nail enhancement
- You enjoy doing your nails at home
- Saving money is one of your priorities
- You want to use a nail enhancement other than acrylic

My Experience Using Modelones Polygel Kit
I was very excited to try this product out when I first purchased it. As I said earlier, it was something new, and I love trying new products or designs on my nails. At first, I thought it would be easy to use and could replace acrylic nails for good.
Unfortunately, my expectations were met with reality when I realized that using polygel is not as easy as it looks. I struggled multiple times until I got a better understanding of how the application process should go.
My Problems When Learning How to Use Polygel
I watched maybe six different videos on how to apply them, and each time I tried to use different colors to see if that would help. I also tried without the dual forms and just did an overlay on my natural nails. After that, I tried using nail forms to create a nail. As you can see, I just kept trying until I got it right.
Here are few issues I dealt with while learning how to apply polygel correctly to my nails.
1. An issue with not curing correctly
In the beginning, I had an issue with the nails being too fragile. One time when I just finished all of my nails and was cleaning up, I decided to pick something up that I dropped earlier. At that moment, I wished I had left it there, but instead, I ended up breaking three nails simultaneously.
That was when I realized I was not curing my nails long enough for each side. I only focused on the surface and not the underside.
2. Incorrectly spreading the polygel
I could not get the right amount of polygel on the dual form to create a smooth nail around the cuticle. Also, the tips of the polygel nails would be very thick because I forgot to spread the polygel on the underside before curing it.
Other times the tips of the nails would be too thin and break off because I spread the polygel too thin.
3. Issues with the brush
My only issue with the kit was the brush. I used the brush three times, and the bristles started to separate and lose their form. Fortunately, I had another brush similar in size. I have heard that this issue happens when you use polygel, but I also try to be gentle with the brush to prevent further damage.
As always, it is important to be gentle with your brushes.
Other than that Modelones polygel is extremely easy to use. The polygel spreads so smoothly with a little bit of slip solution. Also, the dual forms are great too, especially since they come in curved and straight. I am not a fan of curved nails, so I never used the curved dual forms, but they work the same as the straight ones.
As you know now, I messed up a lot, but that is okay because eventually, I learned some tips and tricks along the way that helped me create my first decent set.
When I Noticed the Importance of Applying Polygel Correctly
As I said earlier when I first started using the product, I was not applying it correctly, which would have allowed me to keep them on for a long time. By my third attempt, I completed a set that looked decent, so I decided to use this set to test how long these nails would last.
Even though I decided to keep them for a longer time, they were not perfect. The nails were a little too thick because I did not spread the polygel enough on the underside. They were also on top of my cuticles or too close to it.
So, the next day some of my fingers felt very tight on the tips of my fingers, and they were very itchy. Eventually, the tightness was becoming unbearable, and I decided to cut them short. I only had these nails for about a week.
That tightness I was feeling was because I failed to spread the polygel enough, nor did I try to file it more after I cured it.
As for the itching, I thought it was because the polygel was too close or on top of my cuticles, but I will later find out that that was not the issue.
My Problem With the Ingredients In the Product
After my third attempt, my nails and my fingers needed some time to heal and grow back healthier since I did not remove them safely.
Make sure to take your time removing the polygel because you can ruin your nails, and it will take a while for them to grow back stronger and healthier.
When my fingers and nails looked a lot better, I was willing to give polygel another go. My fourth time using polygel was the time I got the best set I have ever had.
The underside of the nails wasn’t too thick so, I didn’t feel tightness like I did before, and they looked and felt more natural compared to my third attempt. Some things could have been better, such as making sure the sides had enough polygel, so they didn’t crack on the sides or try not to be too close to the cuticle.
Although this set was good, I still felt itchiness all around my fingernails. Then I started to get a rash on different parts of my body, which happened last time. The first I got this rash I thought it was because of something else, but now it seems like I was only getting this rash after I applied this product to my nails.
Also, the tips of my fingers began to feel very warm compared to the rest of my hands. Then I started to see tiny spots on my fingers tips, and at that point, I decided to remove these nails.
About a week after I removed the polygel, the rash began to go away, and my fingers were no longer as warm and itchy. Eventually, the skin on my fingertips started peeling, but my nails were still healthy.
After this breakout, I believe that there is something in this product that caused an allergic reaction. I am not sure whether or not this product has MMA in it because there is no ingredients list listed anywhere. So be cautious If you do decide to use this product.
Things I Realized While Using Modelones Polygel Kit
- Some colors cure times are different, and some colors are easier to use. I find light pink #003 is easier to use than pure white #001
- If you don’t carefully spread the underside before curing, the tips of your fingers can get damaged, and the nails will feel uncomfortable
- The dual forms might not fit some fingers around the cuticle correctly, so cut the bottom edges of the dual forms to get a better fit
- These nails can feel very light and almost natural when they are applied correctly
- There is no unpleasant smell
- Spreading the polygel can be soothing
- The removal process is not easier than acrylic because just using a nail file will take a long time
- Consider investing in a drill to speed up the process, and you will need to soak your nails in nail remover too.
Recommended Improvements
Modelones Polygel Kit is easy to use, but I think some things are missing in this kit that would have been useful.
Should come with an extra nail brush
As I said earlier, this kit comes with a brush and a spatula. These two items come attached on different ends. My issue with this tool is that the nail brush does not have longevity. After three uses, the bristles on the nail brush started to separate, which caused a problem with spreading the polygel.
Should come with nail clips
Another issue I was dealing with was the polygel lifting from my nail when applying the dual form to my nail and trying to cure the polygel. After I spread the polygel evenly on the dual form, I would lightly press the dual-form onto my nail. Within seconds the polygel and the dual form would lift from my nail.
Sometimes this would happen while I was curing the nail. So, I think it is best to add a few nail clips to the kit, so they can hold the dual form down and help you avoid a lifting problem.
Should come with nail forms
This kit only comes with dual forms for when you are trying to build a nail, but there is another tool you can use to create polygel nails. This nail tool is called a nail form, and if you want a more natural look around the cuticle, these would be best.
Also, if you want to practice with nail forms, using polygel as a practice tool would be great because it does not harden unless you cure it, unlike acrylic.
Should come with a cleaner for the dual forms and brush
Adding a cleaner might not be necessary, but it would be a nice touch for cleaning the brush, spatula, and the dual-forms. Adding some alcohol or nail cleanser would be great.
Tip: When cleaning your brush it might be better to use a thick builder gel so you can bring all the bristles back together.
After dipping your brush in the gel, move it back and forth on a hard surface to get all the bristles to stay together. Then, you will use a wipe to remove the gel. Make sure you keep your fingers pinched on the brush and wipe and move towards the tip of the brush!
Should come with nail remover wrap pads
As I said earlier, the removal process is not quick and easy because after filing off the polygel, you will still need to soak your fingers in nail remover for 10 to 20 minutes. That is why I think this kit should come with nail remover wraps or nail polish remover caps.
This kit gives you almost everything else to remove the polygel except the wraps. These would be a better alternative than using cotton balls and aluminum foil.
Should Include a List of Ingredients
It is best to know what ingredients are in a product. That will help the consumer know if any of the ingredients may cause an allergic reaction. No one wants to spend money on a product they cannot use for its intended purpose.
How You Can Purchase the Product
I bought this product on Amazon, but you can also purchase a similar kit on Modelones website.
My Overall Review
Using polygel is not as easy as it seems if you are not used to creating nails at home, but it is doable. The product itself is not difficult to work with, but it is just hard as a beginner learning how to apply the product correctly. I will not be using modelones polygel on my nails again, but I will use it on a fake practice hand to improve my ability to use this type of nail enhancement.
If you enjoy doing your nails, I am sure you will enjoy using polygel. If you decide to give this product a try, I would love to see how your nails turned out and hear about your experience using Modelones Polygel Kit in the comments. Hopefully, it is different from my experience.
