What Are The Benefits Of Cleansing Your Skin With Oil

If you want to learn more about oil cleansing, it would be best to tell you how your skin benefits from this process. Using clean oils on the skin helps lift excess sebum, clean out clogged pores, and remove makeup, pollutants, and dead skin.

As you may know, traditional facial cleansers can contain many surfactants that could irritate the skin, cause dryness, or worsen acne. Due to the surfactants used as detergents or foaming agents, regular cleansers may not be the best choice for your skin.

In comparison, oil cleansing can help balance out the skin and lock in hydration. Since oil absorbs oil, it can effectively remove dirt from the skin while giving it healing properties and nutrients. This makes oil cleansing great for those that have dry or mature skin.

The Best Oils To Use For Oil Cleansing

It is necessary to know that not all oils are equal, especially when it comes to skincare. So whether you want to create a DIY oil cleanser or buy one from the store, you should know what kind of oils to look for.

It is also crucial that you buy high-quality oils if you are planning to make your cleanser. You want cold-pressed, unrefined, virgin oils for the skin.

As for buying a premixed oil cleanser, make sure there are no scents or dyes listed in the ingredients because those can irritate the skin.

Oils You Can Use

  • Olive oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Sweet almond oil
  • Argan oil
  • Castor oil
  • Sunflower oil
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Apricot kernel oil

With that information, you should also know that some oils are better suited for specific skin types. If you are using the list above as a guide on what to look for, you should also choose oils that will benefit your skin.

Dry skin

If hydration is what you want, you should use more olive oil when making your own since it is rich in vitamins and antioxidants. Avocado or sunflower oil are also some great oils for this skin type.

Oily skin

If you are making your oil cleanser, you should use more castor oil since it is antibacterial. Also, castor oil acts as an astringent cleaner and can help dry out the skin. Other oils you should look for are grapeseed, jojoba oil, argan, or lavender oil because they are lighter oils.

Normal or Sensitive skin

These skin types should choose calming oils on the skin. Those types of oils would be rosemary and camellia seed oil.

A step in your skincare routine that can help your skin appear shinier and healthier, and that step is oil cleansing. Anyone can do it. It doesn’t matter if you have oily skin or not. #skincare #facewash #oilyskin #dryskin

Oil Cleansing Methods

Since you know what type of oils you should use, you will also need to choose which method you will apply these oils. There are two ways you can oil cleanse.

One method is a regular oil cleanse, and the other method is a K-beauty technique.

Regular Oil Cleanse

After applying the oil to your skin and massaging it into the skin for one to two minutes, you will remove it with warm water or a wet washcloth. Then you will pat dry and continue with the rest of your routine.

K-beauty Technique

Apply the oil to your skin, massage it in, then wipe it off with a wet washcloth or rinse with warm water. After that, you will then follow with a mild face wash. You would want to use a creamy face wash or a gel-like face wash.

Tip: you can wash your face twice with the oil, then follow with a regular face wash.

  1. Oil cleanse over dry skin
  2. Oil cleanser over wet skin (you should see the oil become a milky consistency)
  3. Use your face wash

What You Should Know About Oil Cleansing

As I said earlier, you can make your oil cleanser or buy a premixed oil cleanser. When shopping around for a premixed version, make sure the product states that it is non-comedogenic, especially if you have acne-prone skin.

It is best to oil cleanse once a day and make it a part of your nighttime skincare routine. You want to make sure that your skin is well-hydrated and free from any makeup or dirt when going to bed. This can also be done as a special treatment to the skin, so it can be done infrequently.

Should I Use a Moisturizer After Oil Cleansing?

You should make that decision based on your skin type or your personal preference. Oily skin types do not have to moisturize at the end of their routine. If you choose the K-beauty technique to oil cleanse, then applying a moisturizer is okay. If you have oily skin, consider using a lightweight moisturizer afterward.

When You Should Be Cautious

Another important note is that oil cleansing may not be for everyone as it can cause allergic reactions, clogged pores, and irritation. There is a chance that you could get an increase in breakouts, and it should not be confused with your skin purging because that is not normal in oil cleansing.

If you do end up with an increase in breakouts, you should consider trying the K-beauty technique, try swapping out different oils or consider sticking to using only a regular face wash.

Takeaways

Oil cleansing is used to lift excess sebum, clean out clogged pores, and remove makeup, pollutants, and dead skin. Oil cleansing is less irritating than using a regular cleanser which is perfect for damaged or dehydrated skin.

Choosing which oils to look for is easier than ever since you know dry skin should opt for oils rich in vitamins and antioxidants, oily skin should look for lighter oils, normal or sensitive skin should use calming oils.

Make sure you choose the best method for you, whether that is the method using a wet washcloth or following with a mild cleanser. Overall, just make sure you give your skin all the love and care it deserves.
